Welcome to South Side Stories

South Side Stories seeks to raise the voices of African American youth living on the South Side of Chicago using “digital stories”. Digital stories combine narratives, images, and music to create a short digital video. Youth work with educators to create their own digital stories and to learn about storytelling, health, and computer skills.

South Side Stories aims to create a body of social science research based on the personal narratives of youth that show how structural factors such as segregation, discrimination, stigma, and violence constrain the freedom, sexuality, and health of young people.

South Side Stories is a collaboration of the Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Ci3) at the University of Chicago, Global Girls, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago Youth Development Program, and the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus. This project is made possible through the generous support of the Ford Foundation.
